Although Target originally reported a list of temporary store closures that included stores in the Northland, the Duluth, Virginia and Grand Rapids Targets remain open but with slightly reduced hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Several stores around the state have closed due to protests and riots that have spilled into the streets after Monday's in-custody death of George Floyd, and a Target store in Minneapolis was among the many businesses that have been looted, vandalized or set on fire in recent days.
"We are heartbroken by the death of George Floyd and the pain it is causing our community," Target said in a statement. "At this time, we have made the decision to close a number of our stores until further notice. Our focus will remain on our team members’ safety and helping our community heal."
As of Saturday morning, Target's temporary closure list included about 50 stores across Minnesota and western Wisconsin, though not all of them are closed, as the Virginia Target is still open. The News Tribune called the store to confirm.
Meanwhile, Cub Foods in Duluth closed at 8 p.m. Friday and will close again at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Friday imposed an overnight curfew in Minneapolis and St. Paul, ordering people off the streets from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Walz said other local jurisdictions could issue their own orders if deemed necessary, though none had been announced in northern Minnesota.
Some retailers, including Walmart, had already eliminated overnight hours in recent months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This story was updated at 10 a.m. May 30 to include updated information on Target and Cub Foods reduced hours. It was originally posted at 9:34 p.m. May 29.
