Even your bathroom isn’t safe from recalls: Kimberly-Clark, the company that makes Cottonelle products, is recalling certain lots of flushable wipes for potential bacterial contamination. The company released a statement on October 9 recalling several lots of their Cottonelle Flushable Wipes and Cottonelle GentlePlus Flushable Wipes manufactured between February 7 and September 14 and shipped to the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. The products may contain the contaminant Pluralibacter gergoviae (previously known as Enterobacter gergoviae). This bacteria is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause various kinds of infections in humans, including urinary tract, gastrointestinal, and respiratory infections. It can be present in food but also cosmetic products. Pluralibacter gergoviae can be antibiotic-resistant, which can make it difficult to treat in some people.
Kimberly-Clark’s recall statement suggests that the outbreak is primarily concerning for people at higher risk of becoming ill: “Individuals who have a weakened immune system, suffer from serious pre-existing conditions, have been treated surgically, or belong to another sensitive group of persons are at particular risk of infection.”
However, the statement notes, “At this time there is a low rate of non-serious complaints, such as irritation and minor infection, reported for the affected wipes.” The company emphasizes that this bacteria is unrelated to COVID-19 and there is no risk of contracting the coronavirus from their wipes.
If you think you may have a product that’s part of this recall, you can go to Cottonelle’s FAQ website to determine whether your wipes are part of a lot that may be contaminated. (You can check for the lot number at the bottom of your wipes package.) If you have wipes that are included in this recall, stop using them and call the company’s customer service line at 1-800-414-0165, which is available Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. ET.
This is a good time to bring up the fact that wet wipes can be irritating even without bacterial contamination. Using wet wipes can cause anal irritation that leads to symptoms like itching, according to the Mayo Clinic. And depending on the ingredients involved (like if your wipes include fragrance), you could experience dermatitis, or skin inflammation, that results in symptoms like a swollen vulva. (Also, even flushable wipes can be pretty terrible for plumbing—the Environmental Protection Agency recommends only flushing toilet paper, nothing else.)
If you feel like you need something more than run-of-the-mill TP, may we suggest a bidet? That might sound like an unrealistically luxurious recommendation, but we actually have a list of affordable bidet attachments all ready for you. Some of them even have temperature control, which is more than wet wipes can say. That’s some next-level butt pampering.
